Fashion
"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. "Coco Chanel
I thought I would teach
fashion to my granddaughter, age 5.
We went shopping at her request. 'Look
grandmother, I like those colors
together, and they're sparkly.'
'You like sparkly?' I asked.
'Sparkly is fun because
it makes me feel happy.
And, when colors are all together,
they look like flowers.'
I decided I'm the one to learn and she's my fashion teacher.
This is posted in response to Ella's prompt over at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads regarding Coco Chanel's quote above on fashion. It reminded me of an incident that happened last year with my granddaughter. And for Open Link Night at dVerse Poets Pub hosted by Natasha Head who generously admonishes us to encourage one another's poetry.

Your granddaughter is wise about fashion.
ReplyDeleteyes, she's wise about many things.
DeleteAnd that is the way clothing should make one feel. She is a smart little girl and sounds like she has a wonderful grandma!
ReplyDeleteWe have such a great time together. I enjoy fashion and she's been fascinated with it from a young age. It's a fun thing to share.
DeleteHow fun! We do learn from our children and grandchildren when it comes to the now n' happy~
ReplyDeleteFun to read and imagine! :D
I like that you name it the "now n'happy"! It feels that way.
DeleteYour poem captures that teaching moment quite well. It may inspire other listening old to young and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy asking her opinions because she always has them.
Deleteha i love kids fashion sense....and it may not be in fashion but it always is to them...i love that she sees them as flowers....smiles.
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me that she has her own sense of fashion, what she likes and what goes together.
Deletei've already started asking my six-year-old daughter about my own fashion choices. like, whaddya think, does this look good together? :)
ReplyDeleteGreat questions to get her thinking about what she likes. She comes up with her own fashion sense and gets to talk about it with you. How fun.
Deletesmiles..we can learn much from a 5 year old.. colors DO make happy...
ReplyDeleteThey do, as do sparkles!
DeleteSweet... Children can teach us so much. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat surprised me was how young she had her own taste.
DeleteToss in "swirly skirt" and that pretty much describes ViMae's approach as well. I love the fact that some girls develop a sense of style at such an early age...especially when those same girls are so strong in other ways, too.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about skirts that twirl when she sins! I'm intrigued about this as well. My grand notices clothes, how they go together, how material drapes and has designed stenciled outfits and cut out outfits. Often our shopping trips are just to look rather than to buy. Although she does like to try on!
DeleteLove this little ones fashion advice.
ReplyDeleteshe's got it right! Sparkles rock!
ReplyDeletechildren definitely have a unique style.
She's opened my eyes to sparkles- life's too short not to enjoy them!
DeleteThis grandmother concurs .....
ReplyDeleteGrandmothering is a blast!
Delete5 year old knows some fashion indeed.
ReplyDeletegreat grandmother poetry.
check out our short story slam today.
best.
Thanks and thanks for stopping by and commenting.
DeleteWhat a wise little sweetheart she is! I still like sparkly. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's really since her that I do as well!
Deletehats off to you for stealing my heart.....
ReplyDeleteOh, that's sweet.
DeleteOh, I know exactly what you are saying here. My granddaughter is about the same age. She does know her style, the colors she likes, etc. Sometimes she stands and poses with mannequins in the store. Little girls of that age are SO much fun!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it amaze you? I have lots of photos of hand on the hips poses. You're right, they're fun! What's extra fun for me is that my daughter was never like this and still doesn't like shopping, so it skipped a generation- bonus!
DeleteSio is she!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! I believe one should dress to make oneself happy. My 16 year old daughter, however, is, at times, mortified at what I wear!
ReplyDeleteThen you must be doing something right! Check out the blog called: Advanced Style to see some fun ways of dressing in our elder years.
DeleteWe could learn a lot from that set. We just need to listen;)
ReplyDeleteThey do have a lot to say so listening is a treat.
DeleteWonderful! Sparkly is good. And the net skirts! I only wore one once, for my high school graduation, nearly 50 years ago. It's hard (for me) to believe it's that long, but I'm sure my 10-year-old niece and my 5-year-old grandniece would believe it's 100 years.
ReplyDeleteK
50 years for me next year- it does seem unbelievable. I remember the net petticoats but I wore them more than once since I thought I was the cat's meow!
DeleteI have four girls and know all about sparkles and my oldest, when asked what her favorite color was she would say "rainbow".
ReplyDeleteFour girls? What fun! Great answer to favorite color.
DeleteSparkly is fun! That little girl is smart.
ReplyDeleteAnd you would know!
DeleteKids are great. Don't you just love their observations? I think we can learn much on many topics from our grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteAs do I- and have fun in the process!
