My, then, totally cute,
love- of- my- life boyfriend
gave me his old and my first car,
a cream colored VW Beetle.
He had moved to NYC
and I was finishing college
in Boston traveling
to home, school, work.
That car held his scent
and showed me his intent.
It was the scene of other firsts as well
but that's for another poem altogether.
He came to visit one weekend
and admired my legs in my mini skirt
as I swung them into the drivers seat.
It's what I remember most
about that car- the jolt
of being in the driver's seat
for the very first time.
I went on to marry that man 41 years ago and we've owned many cars since but talk frequently and fondly of our first car... Posted for Herotomost at Real Toads who asked us to write about our first car.
No "backseat driver" he was too busy staring at your legs. Adorable
ReplyDeleteFunny about that- I was self conscious about my "fat" legs. He re-labeled them "muscular and toned" and changed my perspective from that day to this. He's sweet like that.
DeleteSo sweet.
DeleteThis is such a sweet story! I enjoyed it very much. :-)
ReplyDeleteTrue stories are the best. Thanks, DJan,
DeleteSo very sweet. So wonderful that the guy followed his car back to you! k.
ReplyDeleteHe knew what he was doing!
DeleteA lovely poem of empowerment, Mary. VWs--they're legendary. Also, they were cheap, back then. When I was finding the pics for my poem, I ran across an ad for a partially restored 64 microbus that they were asking *only* $60 THOUSAND for--I think mine cost about $500.Times change, but the memories--not so much.
ReplyDeleteLegendary and part of so many folks lives of our generation. Years later I bought John a replica of that VW, even the same color. He keeps it on his desk shelf.
Deletethe jolt
ReplyDeleteof being in the driver's seat
for the very first time..... terrific
Thanks, first cars play a big role in our lives.
DeleteHey, I remember the first minidress that was admired by a boy that I had a blind date with. It was green corduroy and had a wide belt that sat on the hipline. It was winter then so I had on tights and knee high boots. It is winter here now too, and that boy who has turned into a man still (46 years later) likes my hips!
ReplyDeleteThose sweet men who redefine our assets!
DeleteI remember vividly my husband's first car. It wasn't much, but it gave us a sense of independence. Love your memories.
ReplyDeleteThat VW was his, my and our first car- gave us a great start and many fond memories.
DeleteI love the romance, I'm a sucker for it. This was so very cool, the fond memory, the nostalgia. It is exactly what I hoped people would remember about their first ride. And... You are still together, amazing. Thanks for playing!
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun memory- thanks for the great prompt.
DeleteOh how I love this. Your poetry is always a treat to read.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sally, I'm glad you enjoy it.
DeleteWhat startling imagery, you in the driver's seat, showing off your legs...Loved how you ended it, the jolt of finding yourself in the driver's seat. It captures a certain youthful attitude, for sure.
ReplyDeleteYoung, with it all in front of us...
DeleteWonderful memories! Also of the car! 😉😘
ReplyDeleteHa! I know what you're thinking of...
DeleteI so enjoyed re-visiting this poem--such sweetness and devotion, with, you know, a little bit of sass. Very charming. Thanks. k.
