Two Doves

Two doves, mottled brown on the red metal roof next door, sang me awake this morning. Not the furious chorus of birds that greet the dawn. But throaty coos, one magnifying the other, until it reached me and led me out of sleep to their morning song.

"And anon there came in a dove at a window, and in her mouth there seemed a little censer of gold, and therewithal there was such a savour as all the spicery of the world had been there."
(Sir Thomas Mallory)

  1. Doves are my favorite birds. We put a dove cote (built for me by by son-in-law) in our yard hoping to attract some nesting doves. Lots of other nesting birds found it to their liking, including an endangered type of bluebird now making a comeback, but, alas, the doves fly by and head home to somewhere else.

  2. My sister has a couple of doves that made a nest on her deck. Now two little babies are not so little any more and will fledge soon. It's a wonderful thing to see! :-)

    1. I even got distracted during group therapy today with a chorus of cooing. Sweet.
