Six-Word Stories For Kelly

"You
think your
thoughts. Me mine."

Knew
I'm outnumbered
by this one.

"Tell
me words."
Hungry for words.

Report
card reported:
a social butterfly.

Her
version: "I
know that stuff."

Small,
but tried
all sports possible.

Swam
with the
big girls. Friends.

College,
found ecology,
never looked back.

Ireland
semester, mind-
expander, life- changer.

Trinidad
rain forest,
and then Carl.

Mother,
follows deeper
rhythms, pays attention.

Two
children adore
her. Why not?

Today is my daughter's birthday. Continuing with the six-word stories, these are about her at various stages of life starting at age three when after an argument with me she announced, hands on hips: "You think your thoughts and I'll think mine." I knew I was in trouble! I enjoyed the process of trying to distil a few of her stories into their essentials. Happy Birthday, Kelly. I love and admire you. I'm glad you were born.

    1. Don't worry about the social butterfly, they turn out just fine- it's a great life skill! Her teacher provided more activities for her when she finished her work.

    1. I can say that now but I had moments in her young life when I questioned just why I thought that was a good goal.

  6. Amazing how one can often tell what kind of adult someone will become by the kind of person they are as a very young child! I enjoyed these.

    1. When she said that at age three, I was floored and asked her to repeat it since I couldn't quite believe what I heard. She said it so confidently and clealy. It was her awareness of our separtateness and her need to be her own person. I was put on notice

  10. Happy birthday, Kelly! I'm glad she was born, too! She certainly has her own mind, doesn't she? Wonder where she got that from? :-)

  12. What a great birthday gift. Love the progression from tiny girlhood to being a mom herself. (I start every class I teach, on the first day, with a six-word memoir project!) Always look forward to your posts. Hope you are well. e

    1. I'm well. I like that you start your class with six-word memoirs- it's good that students are thinking about memoirs. We leave for Trinidad on the 16th. Yikes! Hugs to you.
