Three Boys at a Beach

Earth shines their image
caught by water, sand and sun,

holds it just a moment
before they move on,

as they must, striding
into their lives, full

of themselves, their families,
their friendships, yet

oblivious to all that too,
aware of just this moment,

the feel of wet sand, the sound
of waves breaking,

a friend's voice.

This is offered for Open Link Monday at Imaginary Garden With Real Toads. The photo is mine of my grandson and his two friends in Trinidad.

  4. Children really know how to enjoy the moment, don't they? This poem is evidence to that reality. I love the photo.

  5. I really love this poem. And the picture makes me homesick for that kind of beach, with waves crashing behind. We have so few of them here in the Pacific Northwest.

    1. This was a lovely beach with great surf and stretches of sand, even a river emptying into the sea so the little ones could play in the water safely.

  6. Yes, they do live in detached contentment, don't they?

  7. This is a very wonderful poem. But, more than that, I imagine how treasured this photo will be ten or more years from now, looking back at childhood. Love your header photo too. Is that your view? Wowzers!!!!!

    1. I think so. Yes, the header photo is the view from my balcony (along with a view of the Adriatic Sea and the Majella Mountains).

    1. I actually meant the sound of the waves breaking and a friend's voice, but I like your interpretation!

  12. Lovely capture of the moment...these children, like summer, grow up very fast ~

  13. Sometimes an instant can encapsulate all of that, as in this photo as perfect as if poised, the water behind them and them striding forward, exact image seemingly before them. It is the observer writing the story. They simply stride, free. Great capture!

    1. Exactly, they simply stride free and I was taking a photo of my granddaughter when I turned and saw them coming.

  15. Do we envy those young folk? I still feel the way they do. Just don't do it often enough anymore.

I like your header picture. It reminds me of the view out back from the place we stayed in Tuscany.

  16. ...and will they ever sleep when the evening comes. Living fully without worries does that. Wonderful poem and a topic I often find myself pondering as I have little ones of my own. :)

  22. Its such an awe inspiring site to watch young people grow and find their way. And you have to be of an age that you can appreciate the beauty in every good and bad thing that they do. I look at my kids everyday and wonder how they goe so smart and grown up. It just happens, too fast. Great writing and photo.

    1. It does happen fast so it's good when we can capture a moment because then it's gone.

    1. That photo sat on my computer desk top for a long while and I knew I wanted to write about it. It seemed so iconic. Finally, I said to myself, just say what's right there in the photo which is what I tried to do.
