The Cool New iPad

I'm writing this post on my new iPad. My iMac is a desktop so, when I travel, I obviously can't take it. But I wanted a way to get email, FB and the internet, especially for the blogosphere. With the iPad I can do all that and also carry my photos, songs as well as any of the 65,000 apps that I've downloaded. Or that my grands have downloaded since both of them have a folder on my desktop with their games.

There are many so many cool things about this iPad that I don't know where to begin. just to name a few: the keyboard is full size, The apps are amazing to a mere novice in this world of things technical, it corrects my spelling as I go along automatically or I can cancel the correction if I want to, it takes a very, very light touch to type, the screen display is 9 1/2 ", photos are large as a result and a flick of the finger moves them forward or backward, it is intuitive which is good for a non techie, it's all done by touch so my finger is my cursor, I can download and read books, and one of the apps is called "Star Walk" which displays the stars and constellations of any direction that I point the iPad and then goes deeper into space with a touch (this is unbelievably, gorgeously cool!).

Deep breath, you really wouldn't believe the number and types of apps under 20 categories. I'd be interested in swapping info on favorites if others have iPads or iPhones. My current fav is the Star Walk- total knock out! If I have access to the Internet, email, FB and my blog, why do I need a computer? I heard Steve Jobs call this a post PC product. Maybe that's what he meant. Hmmmm.

What's your favorite app?

  1. Very cool. No iPad, unfortunately. MacBook Pro. That said, the Mac and the iPad are worlds ahead of the rest of the market in many aspects of their systems - not hte least of which is usability.

But anything that helps you get online is okey-damn-dokey, in my book.

  2. I am assuming, looking at yours, that you have an iPad 1, right? I have been pondering the purchase of a Kindle, since I have a Macbook that I travel with, an iPod Touch I carry with me, and really wonder if I would need anything more than a way to read books.

But now you've got me interested again!! My favorite app on my Touch is my bird calls to help identify new ones by song.

  3. Lou, My husband has the MacBook Pro as well, or as he calls it: "the real computer." He's a Mac guy, for sure. But there's an app store icon on your dock so don't you have apps? p.s. I laughed at the "okey-damn-dokey"!
DJan, Yes, the iPad has an app called iBooks similar to the Kindle. It also has a Kindle app. I love the bird call app suggestion- I'll try it!

  4. I have a MacBook and an iPad I travel with. My iPad won't let me blog, though. I can enter a header and a footer, but it won't let me get into the body. I have neighbor looking around for an app that will work. Did you have to do anything special? Or maybe the iPad 2 has fixed the problem.

  5. Linda, I go to my blog through Safari and then it looks exactly like my desk top Mac. I sign in and go to "new post" at the top on the iPad, then write it. What's your favorite app?

  6. Mary I don't have an I-Pad as yet and use a laptop PC to blog. Do you think I would adjust quickly to an I-Pad? I'd love to have something lighter and more all inclusive to use when I travel. Did you get a new generation I-Pad? My husband would like to buy one for me for my upcoming birthday but I am reluctant to spend so much money if it will end up being a new toy I don't use.

  7. I love my iPad, mostly because of its size the versatility. I use mine mostly for reading blogs and email, viewing videos, and playing Snood. Plan to add some new apps and then blog about iPod vs iPad. I will definitely add the Star Walk app and bird songs.

  8. Pat, The price didn't go up for the next generation iPad. It's super light and small and yet big enough to be easy to see things. If you go to an Apple store, you can try one out and get all your questions answered by the folks there. You can also set up time with an associate to be tutored in how to use any aspect you want to learn Try it. You might like it.
B.O.G., My grandson loves the Star Walk app! Every night we'd be outside (although you never have to leave the house) looking at the stars. Snood- another new one! If you like Scrabble, try Words HD- fun!

  9. Very cool. We almost bought an iPad last spring before our trip to Europe and decided to wait because at that time photos could not be downloaded.

I just got the iPhone. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I love it. I also have a Kindle which I really do like. I don't think that I would like to read on the iPad because it is too big. I do think I will be getting a iPad soon.

I access my blog through Safari, just like Linda does. I don't know if that works on the iPad. I'm not into apps much yet. My husband is though. So far, I like Pandora, a free radio station. I also like RedLaser for price comparison. Oh, and then there is Flixter which help you find movie theaters and allows you to watch movie trailers. It is all quite amazing.

  10. Lauren, Do you play it?
Sally, I have a small connector (bought extra) that lets me download photos. Safari is on the iPad. Pandora is great but doesn't yet work in Italy so I just use it in the states. RedLaser? I'm there! And Flixter- thanks for the suggestions, they're already downloaded as I read! Truly amazing!

  11. I find the ipad very fascinating....I don't own one. When I flew last week, the man in next seat was watching a movie and I couldn't believe the clarity...it was awesome!
I got my iphone in December and love it. I play words with friends and I love IMDB, enter movie name or actors name and there you go....everything you want to know about everything/ha

  12. Nanny, IMDB is reviewed very favorably in the latest issue of "Mac Life" And, yes, the clarity is fabulous. My husband also loves his iPhone. Actually he loves all things Mac!

  13. I am so jealous! I'm not a Mac computer fan (tried, but couldn't get the hang of the interface; guess I've been a PC too long), but I love my iPod Touch, and I really want an iPad.
