Steve Jobs, Rilke, Monet

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

                                            Steve Jobs
                                                    Stanford University Commencement address, 2005

You carry within you the capacity to imagine and give shape to your world. It is a pure and blessed way of living. Train yourself to this, but also trust whatever comes. If it comes from your desire, from some inner need, accept that and hate nothing.

  1. It has taken me 55 years to begin to understand this, from the inside out. Comparison is slipping away.

I love this gift of age!

  2. Like Ruth, it's taken me a long time to get to where I am in terms of understanding, in terms of living - in terms of loving.

The dictates of society mean so much less. The dictates of my heart mean so much more.

  7. Ruth, A gift indeed and retirement has given this interiority a further boost.

Lou, What a good thing to be able to say.

DJan, It is amazing that 100 years separate these two but the message is the same. And Monet just embodies it. Tis truth is like the hidden jewel to make our lives rich.

Sunny, welcome to my blog and thanks for stopping by. I went to your blog and I'm in awe that you write poetry in a language that's not your original one. How brave you are!

  11. I love that Steve Jobs' commencement address has been getting so much attention, and I hope it is reaching lots of people who can benefit from the message. My hubby internalized that attitude long ago, and he helped me become more willing and able to be my own person.

  14. I truly believe these sentiments. We can be our own best boosters. Sadly, too many of us are our own worst enemy.
